Encourage your Senator to support S. 3067 to promote access to diabetic shoes.

Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and co-sponsors Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Chuck Grassley (R- Iowa) have introduced S. 3067 to amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to permit nurse practitioners and physician assistants to satisfy the documentation requirement under the Medicare program for coverage of certain shoes for individuals with diabetes.

“Therapeutic shoes are a proven method for preventing costly and painful complications related to diabetes, yet current Medicare regulations force patients to endure a time consuming process to obtain them,” said Collins, the founder and co-chair of the Senate Diabetes Caucus.

The Promoting Access to Diabetic Shoes Act S. 3067, is endorsed by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners American Academy of Physician Assistants and the American Podiatric Medical Association.

The Honorable (full name of Senator)
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator (last name)

My name is (full name) and I am a (profession) at (name of organization) in ( location).

I urge you to support the Senate Bill S.3067 to promote access to diabetic shoes.

Access to appropriate diabetic footwear has proven to be an effective preventative strategy against costly and painful complications related to diabetes yet current Medicare regulations make it very difficult for patients to obtain them. As a result, the number of qualified diabetic shoe providers has been drastically reduced over the past ten years. Supporting this bill will save tax payers money.

By permitting nurse practitioners and physician assistants to satisfy the certifying physician requirement managing the patients diabetes, access to this benefit will be increased significantly and contribute to more equal access to the benefit -especially to your constituents in rural areas – where diabetes incidence is higher.

Please feel free to contact me at (contact details) if I can be of any further assistance as you review and hopefully support this important bill.
Yours sincerely,
